It’s NOT About the Technology, It’s About the Community

5 June 2008 2 Comments

Today I read a comment somewhere (I honestly can’t remember where it was) saying in which somebody said Twitter was a waste of time as technologies like it have existed for ages, just in different forms - I believe ICQ was mentioned as an example. It could have been another thing with a few different letters though, so don’t quote me on it.

What this person failed to see is that a community has formed around Twitter. You can debate all day long as to why this has happened and what motivates people to Tweet, but the community around the platform is a given. And that’s why people keep coming back.

And once a community is formed the barrier to change becomes higher. People don’t necessarily move because something is better, they’ll move if all their friends move.
