Offline Google Maps/Facebook Mash Up

20 June 2008 No Comment

Our local search guru, Martijn Beijk just pointed me at an interesting article on Search Engine Land.

According to the Telegraph teenagers are using Google Maps to locate houses with swimming pools. After they’ve located a swimming pool a group on Facebook is started to invite all their friends to this house, without the owner’s knowledge or consent.

After teenagers inviting complete strangers via Facebook and other social networking sites to come crash their parents house while they are on holiday, this seems to be the latest craze.

Police have warned local residents about the possibility of finding drunk teens and/or empty beer cans in their swimming pools:

“We are advising owners of swimming pools to be on their guard and extra vigilant. We would also warn prospective swimmers that using someone else’s pool is trespassing and therefore illegal.”

Whilst the practice is quite ingenious and I applaud this effort in using online tools to enhance offline life, I’m not sure the pool owners approve!

And the worst bit? Bournemouth seems to be the place where all this is happening! What are the odds on the police having clamped down on this practice before I move back in October?
